Career as a Engineering College professor, Interview with Mr. Chiranjeevi

Chiranjeeva Rao is presently working with GMRIT, Rajam Engineering College in andhra Pradesh as a Assistant Professor. He has been working in this Field from the past 7 years, So we thought it would be useful to publish his interview to share his expertise about teaching profession at an Engineering College, please go through this small interview we had over a cup of coffee.

Designation : Assistant Professor
Department : Mechanical Engineering
WOrking for : GMRIT, Rajam ( A well established Engineering College with autonomus Status, hope will become a deemed university in couple of years )

CT: About Your Profession (Assistant Professor) in Few Lines
There are different challenges in front of the Engineering Education. Countries are funding more money and spending more time towards research and infra. Present day focus of all the developed countries is on outcome based Education. If teaching is opted as a career then there is ample scope for research and the quality of education will improve , Obviously it will reflect in financial aspects.
CT:  On a scale of 1-5, how do you rate the following

CT: Tell us about working hours of a Assistant Professor ?
8 hours working ,i.e 9 Am To 5 PM, Four times Bio-metric finger prints are required in a day ( before 9 AM, After 12.30pm, Before 1.30pm and after 5.00 pm )

CT :DO you engage in Work related activities after working hours?
Yes ( Mostly Admistrative works ).

CT: Things you like about Being a Assistant Professor?
1. Chances to update my knowledge are more
2. Better environment to do Research
3. Reorganization and respect is more
4. Number of holidays are more than other jobs

CT: Things you don't like about being a Assistant Professor?
1. Huge number of students in a class is a common sight in present day sight
2. Working hours
3. giving importance for administrative works than teaching

CT: Work Location and Job Availability in Different Countries?
1. In INDIA - Andhrapradesh, Tamilanadu, MP, Karnataka, Orissa
2. Most of the Gulf countries.

CT: Please explain us typically,how career graph of a Assistant Professor?
Career in Teaching profession is considered to be slow and steady, But contrary to that On working with Good Educational Institution or college ( In the sense, The college which has good motto of outcome based Education ), the career can takes a long jump and result in faster growth.

CT: Skills or qualities required to become a Assistant Professor?
1. Good grip on fundamentals
2. Adopting the environment and surroundings to our topic (Real time Applications )
3. Better understanding of the tasks and topics
4. Analyzing of the things
5. command on subject
6. Fearlessness in delivering the lecture

CT:Your suggestion to aspirants,who want to be a Assistant Professor?
1. Don't opt this for a temporary profession, Plan for a long time.
2. If your passion is teaching, then you will enjoy a career as Professor.
3. Just Reading out from the text book or dictating is not called teaching, So strong preparation with an orientation of analysis is required to deliver a great lecture.
4. Updating your knowledge in your area of interest is must.

CT:How to become a Assistant Professor ?
1. M.Tech is must ( preferance will be given for the degree from premier institutes like NITs IITs RECs etc.. ) for the position of Assistant professor
2. To start your career as associate professor, Ph.D degree is required with good research

2. Also there are many Engineering Colleges in India which offer good salaries ( present ,Sixth pay, with DA HRA , TKK like benefits )
