CT: Tell Us About You?


My name is Bhardwaj Velamakanni and I am an independent Management Consultant, Agile Coach and Trainer with technical background having more than 20 years of IT & Software Development experience with 10 years in leading, managing, coaching, training, facilitating and mentoring large teams on complex technical projects. Trained, Coached and Transitioned multiple teams to Agile and rolled out Agile practices. Implemented large- scale Agile frameworks for program-level transitions.


My certifications include:

1) Certified Scaled Agile Framework Program Consultant: SAFe – SPC.
2) Certified Scrum Professional (CSP) and Certified Scrum Master (CSM).
3) Certified Project Management Professional (PMP).
4) PMI Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP).
5) Certified Six-Sigma Black-Belt.

Past roles & responsibilities include: 1)Agile Coach, Trainer, Transitional & Management Consultant. 2)Scrum Master. 3)Business Analyst and RUP & UML specialist. 4)Process Management consultant (ISO, CMM, FDA and Six Sigma focus). 5)Project, Process, Program & Delivery Manager.

CT: About Your Profession (Agile Coach) in Few Lines
My profession involves enhancing the team culture and performance and ultimately result in elevated productivity and quality levels. As a part of my job, I train and coach the teams towards agility with focus on Agile frameworks like Scrum, Kanban, Scrumban etc

CT: Tell us about working hours of a Agile Coach ?
I work in the regular hours morning to evening, day shift.

CT: Things you like about Being a Agile Coach?
The profession is really challenging and any amount of success achieved is really fulfilling.

CT: Things you don't like about being a Agile Coach?
Many of the strategies and the decisions are dependent on the third parties.

CT: Work Location and Job Availability for Agile related technology in Different Countries?
Many project management teams are adopting Agile across the globe now a days. So, there are ample of job opportunities almost everywhere. US pays the highest, followed by UK.


CT: Do you engage yourself in job related work even after working hours ?
 Not much, except when I am coaching the offshore teams remotely.

CT: Please explain us typically,how career graph of a Agile coach?

Ideal starter candidate is expected to have a basic knowledge of the development life-cycle. In a couple of years s/he can become a proficient Agile team member.

Within 5 years, the candidate would be a good Scrum Master or a Product Owner with a better pay. In the US Scrum Masters and Product Owners tend to make anywhere between $60 and $85 an hour, depending on the experience.

In 10 years, the candidate can start coaching the teams and the coach salaries usually start at $85 an hour and go up to $120 an hour in some cases. Senior Coaches act as Agile Transition Consultants and some of them make up to $300 an hour on the average, depending on the expertize and experience.

* Training & Coaching ability

* Scrum-Mastering skills

CT:Your suggestion to aspirants,who want to be a Agile Coach?
Get started with the basics of Agile and learn as much as possible. Certified Scrum Master (CSM) - certification - is a first step in the right direction. There are other certifications to add to that. Enhance your training and coaching skills.

CT:How to become a Agile Coach ?
Qualifications or Certifications are not that important (but helpful) as compared to the knowledge and experience.

Almost every company uses Agile now a days - Starting with Google, Microsoft, Yahoo, Amazon, Paypal etc
